- In the event of a fire, a resident/tenant should pull a fire alarm station located in their building. This activates a full building alarm.
- Make sure the front door is closed to your unit. If you are told to vacate the building, feel the front door first. IF IT IS HOT, do not open. If the door is not hot, be sure to take your door key and vacate your unit immediately. If fire is blocking your front door, the breezeway or stairwell exit, go to your balcony. Close the sliding glass door and WAIT ON THE BALCONY. If you have time, take a bed sheet with you to hang over the balcony to attract attention.
- DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS. Use the stairs. Make sure the stairwell door is closed. Carry a wet cloth to enable you to breathe in case of smoky conditions.
- Disabled persons will be evacuated by the fire marshal. If you are disabled, be sure to register your disability with the fire department. Disabled individuals should remain in their unit until someone comes for you - unless the fire started in your unit.
- If you must remain in your unit, fill the bathtub with water. Wet towels and sheets to stuff around doors. Breathe through a wet cloth and lie on the floor if necessary.
- Most importantly, NEVER IGNORE A FIRE ALARM!!!
